Abstract:
Pesticides are significant pollutants of aquatic ecosystems, prompting extensive research into the development of sustainable materials for their removal. Brewer’s spent grain, the main by-product of the brewing industry, represents a lignocellulosic biomass with considerable adsorption potential arising from its porous structure and the presence of various functional groups. This paper discusses the potential of brewer’s spent grain as a bioadsorbent for the removal of selected pesticides from aqueous solutions, with emphasis on its structural characteristics, adsorption capacity, and factors influencing process efficiency. The importance of brewer’s spent grain in the context of green chemistry, circular economy, and waste valorization is also considered. Previous studies indicate that brewer’s spent grain is an environmentally friendly, renewable, and cost-effective adsorbent with significant potential for water purification.
